The history of our company

The two long-standing companies GAZ and Wieser decided in 2014 to merge to create a strong company, namely GW Batterien GmbH.

Both companies can look back on a sweeping corporate history.

Corporate history of GAZ (Davy lamps and batteries from Zwickau)

GAZ is synonymous with a corporate history which started more than 100 years ago in Zwickau when the company Friemann & Wolf was founded. Through the decades the legal form and the name of the company have been changed several times, the business areas continuously extended and the reach of the range extended to include new, innovative products

1884: Founding of the company Friemann & Wolf: development and manufacture of gasoline safety    lamps for underground mining
1920: Conversion to battery-operated Davy lamps: production of NiCd batteries
1930: Production of NiCd train light batteries and lead starter batteries for motor vehicles
1990: Extension of the sales operation for batteries – founding of GAZ Batterie GmbH
2003: Specialisation into rail batteries (reconditioning, service, new development)
2005: Initial projects for OEM
2011: Intensification of business activity in the rail sector

Corporate history of Wieser

1993: Company founded by Dipl.-Ing. N. Wieser (BEng): project planning, sales and assembly of stationary battery systems worldwide
1999: Initial contracts with Deutsche Bahn (reconditioning, service)
2003: Specialisation into rail batteries (reconditioning, service, new development)
2006: Distributor for CSB Battery
2009: Founding of Wieser Industrie- und Bahntechnik GmbH
2011: Logistics partner for Sunlight Systems
2012: Initial projects for OEM (rail vehicle batteries)
